Following the entry into force of the visa-free regime between the European Union and Georgia in March 2017, a surge in asylum applications and an increase in irregular migration was observed in several EU countries.
This situation led to collective action between Georgia and different EU members to combat irregular migration. One of these actions was the first phase of the European Prometheus project, which ran from 2019 to 2021.
Although in 2020, due to the pandemic, there was a decrease in asylum applications, the current situation has returned to 2018 figures. In the first half of 2022 alone, almost half of all applications were made during 2021. So given the good results of the first phase the European Union is funding the second phase of Prometheus which aims to contribute to the efforts of the Georgian authorities in the fight against cross-border organised crime, especially in relation to smuggling and trafficking in human beings.
This second phase will be supported by the security forces of France, Italy, Latvia and Spain who together will fight with their Georgian counterparts in the fight against migration and trafficking in human beings.
